Mennään markkinoille / Let's go to the Christmas market

  Joulumarkkinoiden katsotaan saaneen alkunsa Saksassa 1200 luvun lopulla ja ovat edelleen oleellinen osa adventtiaikaa siellä, eli kyse on varsin vanhasta perinteestä J Saksassa markkinat alkavat jo marraskuun lopulla, Suomessa yleisimmin hiukan myöhemmin.  Turku on yksi poikkeuksista. Siellä markkinat alkoivat ensimmäistä adventtia edeltävänä lauantaina 26.11.  Lohjan perinteiset menneen ajan joulumarkkinat ovat nyt tulevana viikonloppuna. Porvoossa joulumarkkinat siitä viikon kuluttua 17. ja 18.12. Helsingissä tapahtumia on useita, esim. Tuomaanmarkkinat 7.-21.12. Senaatintorilla ja Vanhan joulumyyjäiset 10.-21.12. Vanhalla ylioppilastalolla.

  Valitsitpa minkä tahansa markkinatapahtuman, niin suosittelen jälkikasvun mukaan ottamista. Nämä ”entisajan messut” voivat olla hyvinkin sivistävä kokemus. Olen nähnyt sepän takovan hevosenkenkiä ilman sähköä, villojen karstaamista ja kehräämistä, asioita joita ei ole enää aikoihin tehty kotona ja kuitenkaan siitä ei ole pitkääkään aikaa kun ne olivat osa Suomalaista arkea.  

  Itse käyn joulumarkkinoilla enemmän kokemassa kuin ostamassa. 2005 menin Lohjan menneen ajan markkinoille kahden Intialaisen työtoverini kanssa.  Ei varmaankaan tule yllätyksenä kun kerron, että nämä tummahipiäiset herrat olivat varsin hämmästyttävä näky tuona päivänä, niin nuorille kuin vanhemmillekin markkinakävijälle. Monella kävi varmaan mielessä että siinä kulkee Tiernapoikien Murjaanien kuningas ja hänen sijaisnäyttelijänsä.

  Hoo-o, jos minä olen musta ..    Muistuikin mieleeni Oulussa näkemäni Tiernashow. Tänä vuonna se on nähtävillä Oulun Teatteri Riossa  ja  Kalajoen Kylpylähotelli Sanissa. Tämä show on vienyt Tiernapoika-perinteen aivan uudelle tasolle. Heidän internet-sivuillaan todetaankin : ” Show yhdistää perinteisen tiernapoikanäytöksen tanssiin, lauluun, musiikkiin ja huikeita juonenkäänteitä sisältävään tarinaan”.  

 

  The beginning of Christmas markets date back to the late medieval Germany and are still a visible part of the advent time. So one can truly say that it’s a tradition J  In Germany the markets start in the end of November, in Finland a bit later. The city of Turku is an exception. There the Christmas market started on the November 26th, the Saturday before 1st advent. The “traditional bygone era’s Christmas market” is now on the coming weekend. Porvoo has it’s market a week from that, on Dec 17th – 18th. In Helsinki there are various events, e.g. at the Senate square the “Tuomaanmarkkinat” open today (Dec 7th) and last ‘till December 21st.

  Which ever Christmas market you choose to visit, I do recommend you to take your kids with you. These “bygone days fairs” can be an educational experience. I’ve seen a blacksmith make a horshoe without the usage of electricity, raw wool being made into yarn, things that haven’t been done at home for ages and it is not so long ago when they were a part of the everyday life in Finland.

  I personally visit the Christmas markets more for the experience that to do shopping. In 2005 I visited the Christmas market in Lohja with two of my Indian colleagues (Sandeep and Kadir). I guess it doesn’t surprise you to learn that these two dark-skinned gentlemen were an astonishing sight that day for both the young and elder market visitors. Many must have had the thought that there goes the king of the Moors from the “Star boys” and his understudy.

Don’t you dare to think that this “Star boys” reference was far fetched J   At the age of 11 (?)

I was one “of the boys” in our school’s christmas play. I’ll get back to the details later …

Itsenäisyyspäivä / Independence day

 Suomen julistautuminen itsenäiseksi 1917 ei ollut suoranainen sodan loppumisen tulos. Suomen edellinen sota oli loppunut reilut 100 vuotta aikaisemmin, jonka lopputuloksena Suomi liitettiin Venäjään ja nimettiin Suomen suurruhtinaskunnaksi.  Venäjällä oli ollut kaksi vallankumousta vuonna 1917 ja Venäjän keisarikunta oli romahti. Näin myös Suomen suurruhtinaskunnan katsottiin hajonneen. Itsenäinen taipaleemme alkoi verisellä sisällissodalla (1918) ja sodimme toisessa maailmansodassa omaa ”erillissotaamme” Neuvostoliittoa vastaan. Eli ei ihme että vieläkin itsenäisyyspäivä liitetään sotaan.

  Televisio on vuosikaudet näyttänyt ”Tuntematonta sotilasta” itsenäisyyspäivänä. Sodista / taisteluistamme Neuvostoliittoa vastaan on tehty lukemattomia muita elokuvia. Useimmissa (nuoret) miehet taistelevat henkensä antaen itsenäisyytemme säilymiseksi, mutta valitettavan harvoin näkee kuvausta lottien panoksesta tai saatika pikkulottien / lottatyttöjen. He olivat Lotta Svärd –järjestön tyttöosaston jäseniä, iältään 8-16 vuotiaita tyttöjä. Pikkulottia oli koulutettu vuodesta 1931 lähtien uskonnollis- isänmaallisessa hengessä.

  Sodanaikana pikkulotat osallistuivat mm. kypärämyssyjen ja lapasten kutomiseen. Lapasiin tehtiin reikä liipasinsormelle. Tämänpäivän yhteiskunnasssa ei tulisi kuuloonkaan pistää noin nuoria tyttöjä kyseisiin tehtäviin. Hehän traumautuisivat moisesta. Ajatteliko kukaan moista 70 vuotta sitten?

  Sodan jälkeen (marraskuussa 1944) pikkulottia oli arvioilta yli 50 000 ja pikkulottien toiminta lakkautettiin samalla käskyllä kuin koko Lotta Svärd järjestö. Rauhansopimuksen 21. artiklan mukaan Suomi oli sitoutunut "hajottamaan kaikki sen alueella toimivat hitleriläismieliset (fasisminluontoiset) poliittiset, sotilaalliset ja sotilaallisluontoiset samoin kuin muutkin järjestöt, jotka harjoittavat Yhdistyneille kansakunnille ja erityisesti Neuvostoliitolle vihamielistä propagandaa. Lotta Svärd toimintaan osallistuneita syrjittiin vuosikymmenet sodan jälkeen, moni (pikku)lotta saatiin tuntemaan häpeää toiminnastaan. Siis ei ihme että me jälkipolvet tiedämme niin vähän heidän panoksestaan (koti)rintamalla, kun siitä vaiettiin yli 40 vuoden ajan.

  Tänään kun sytytän sinisen kynttilän (Intiassa) työpöydälleni, niin palakoon se pienten ja ”isojen” lottien panokselle  itsenäisyytemme hyväksi.

Soppatykki / "soup-canon"

  When Finland declared to be independent in 1917, it wasn’t a direct result of a war ending. The previous war where the country had been had ended more than 100 years before, a war after which Finland was merged to Russia and named the grand duchy of Finland. Russia had had two revolutions in 1917 and the empire collapsed. It was regarded that also the grand duchy of Finland had dissolved. Our independent path started with a bloody civil war (1918) and we WW2 fought our own “separate war” against Soviet Union. So no wonder our independence day is still linked with war.

  The Finnish TV has broadcasted for years the movie “Unknown soldier” on December 6^th. Of the wars / battles we’ve had with the Soviet Union, numerous movies has been made. In most of the (young) men fight ‘till they die for the nation to keep its independence. Seldom do the movies describe the the input of finnish women or girls, the Lottas and Lotta-girls. The lotta-girls were members of the girl-unit of the Lotta Svärd – organization, aged 8-16 years. Lotta-girls had been trained since 1931 in the spirit of religion and patriotism.

  During the war the lotta-girls were e.g. knitting helmet-hoods (reminds a bit a ski-mask with one whole, worn under the helmet during winter) and mittens. The mittens had a hole for the trigger-finger. In today’s society you wouldn’t even consider placing young girls in such activities. Todays young girls would be traumatized.

Was anyone considering that 70 years ago?

  At the end of continuation war (November 1944) there were about 50000 lotta-girls.  In the Peace treaty article 21, the Soviet Union demanded that all organisations considered by them to be paramilitary, fascist or semi-fascist be banned. Thus, the Lotta Svärd organisation was one of the groups which was disbanded, including the Lotta-girls unit.

  For decades the women who had been a part of the Lotta Svärd activites were discriminated, many Lottas (and Lotta-girls) were made to feel ashamed of what they had been a part of. So no wonder we, the “following generations” , know so little of their input in the (home)front, when it was a topic that everyone kept quiet about for over 40 years.

  Today when I light a blue candle in by office-cubicle (in India), may it burn for the effort & sacrifice the small and “big” lottas made for our independence.

Joulusiivous / Cleaning for christmas

Viimeistään nyt on oikea aika alkaa miettiä joulusiivousta. Mitä aikaisemmin aloitat, sitä rauhallisemmin aattoaika etenee. Ohessa suora lainaus Mysi Lahtisen Joulu-kirjasta siivousvinkkejä.

1. Siivouslista

Tee siivouslista, johon merkitset mitä kaikkea joulusiivoukseesi kuuluu. Voit esimerkiksi tehdä listan kotisi huoneista, ja huoneiden alle voit merkitä kaapit, laatikostot yms., jotka haluat siisteiksi ennen aattoa. Aina kun olet saanut yhden asian valmiiksi, voit viivata sen yli listasta. Tehtävien yliviivaaminen saa mielen tyytyväiseksi!

2. Ikkunoiden pesu

Ikkunoiden peseminen on viheliäistä puuhaa talvisin. Jos on pakkasta, koko homman voi unohtaa. Suojasäällä ikkunoita voi pestä, mutta Ellit suosittelevat tämän raskaan tehtävän delegointia perheen miehille. He kun yksinkertaisesti palelevat vähemmän.

3. Vaatehuone

Heti kun ulkona on tarpeeksi kuiva ilma, on hyvä viedä vaatekaapin vaatteet ulos tuulettumaan. Samalla hyllyt ja lattiakin pyyhkiytyvät kuin itsestään. Laita kaappiin laventelipusseja, jotta saisit vaatehuoneen hyvän tuoksuiseksi. Jos olet saanut lahjaksi hajuvettä, jota et kuitenkaan halua itse käyttää, toimii se hyvin vaatehuonehajusteena. Suihkuta hajuvettä puhtaisiin kangaspaloihin ja laita niitä vaatehuoneen hyllyille tai sido henkariin. Myös muoti- ja naistenlehtien sivuilta voi repiä hajuvesimainoksia talteen, ja kiinnittää ne henkareihin.

4. Kynttilänjalat ja hopeiden kiillotus

Steariiniset kynttiläjalat saa puhtaiksi ihan helposti. Raaputa tukevalla puukolla steariinit pois kynttiläpesästä. Valumat lähtevät pois, kun keitetään kiehuvaa vettä, joka kaadetaan ämpäriin. Upota kynttilänjalka kuumaan veteen ja harjaa steariini pois. Jos kaikki steariinit eivät lähde pois, niin keitä toinen kattilallinen kiehuvaa vettä ja tee toimenpide uudestaan. Kuivaa käsipyyhkeellä kynttilänjalat kuiviksi ja kiiltäviksi.

5. Matot ja lattiat

Matot on syytä putsata kerran vuodessa. Tamppaa matot ja heitä ne sen jälkeen lumihankeen. Lakaise mattojen päälle lunta ja harjaa matot sen jälkeen kunnolla. Käännä matto ja tee sama temppu. Jätä matot hankeen tuulettumaan, ja vie ne sisälle vasta kun olet pessyt lattiat kiiltävän puhtaiksi.

6. Liinat ja servietit

Pese, mankeloi ja silitä pöytäliinat kangasservietit ajoissa.

7. Sauna ja kylpyhuone

Sauna ja kylpyhuone kannattaa pestä vasta viimeisen saunakäynnin jälkeen ennen joulua. Lauteiden välit on syytä harjata kerran vuodessa. Istu laiteilla ja harjaa ne tiskiharjalla. Jos vietät joulua maalla syreenipensaspuiden katveessa, lämmitä saunalla syreenipensaan puilla – siitä pitäisi tulla hyvä tuoksu.

8. Joulupetaus

Pese ja mankeloi joululakanat ajoissa, sillä aattona on ihanaa pujahtaa puhtaiden, tuoksuvien lakanoiden väliin. Lapsia riemastuttaa, jos piilotat tyynyjen alle jonkun jouluyllätyksen. Jos haluat luoda oikein ylellistä joulutunnelmaa, ompele oikeiden ruusujen terälehtiä tyynyliinojen reunoihin. Tai levitä terälehtiä lakanoille. Niistä tulee vieno tuoksu, ja perheesi näkee varmasti ihanan ruusuisia unia.

Moon kuullu, jotta kannattaa pistää kaartemummaa pellille ja pelti kuumaa uuniin. Sitte vaa kasteloo villasukan tolulla ja viskoo sen sohovan alle, niin johan o samantien joulutunnelma valamis. Haisoo ihan puhtaalta. Ei tarvi kuurata lattiaa polovet ruvella eikä julumaa pullataikinaa leipooo aamukolemee.

Luo tietokoneellesi uusi kansio ja anna kansiolle nimeksi "Kodin pölyt ja sotkut". Ota lasillinen glögiä ja pipari. Klikkaa oikealla hiirinäppäimellä uutta kansiota ja valitse "Poista". Tietokoneesi kysyy nyt: "Haluatko poistaa Kodin pölyt ja sotkut lopullisesti?" Klikkaa "kyllä". Nosta jalat pöydälle, ota lisää glögiä ja pipareita ja nauti!

Now it's the prefect time to start planning for the christmas cleaning. The earlier you start, the more relaxed you'll be when christmas eve approaches. I found a ready made list from internet. It is from the Christmas -book by Mysi Lahtinen.

1. Prepare a list

2. Window washing

In freezing temperatures you cannot wash windows, from outside atleast

3. Closets / wardrobes

As soon as the weather is dry, take all your clothes outside. Now the shelves and floor is easy to be cleaned.

Place a couple lavender pouches in the closet.

4. Polishing silverware and candle sticks

5. Carpets and floors

Carpets need to be cleaned at least once a year. Take them out and thow them into the snow. Brush them, tur around and leave them on the snow for a while.

6. Table clothes and napkins

Wash, wring or iron your table clothes and napkins well be before the day of need.

7. Sauna and bathrooms

Sauna should be washed only after the last usage before christmas. Use a dishwashing-brush to clean the seats.

8. Making the beds

Wash, wring or iron your christmas bed clothes well before the day of need. It sooooo nice to slip between clean, wrinkle free sheets. Kids get a kick if you hide a small surprise under the pillow.

But there are (at least) two known short-cuts :

Bake cardamom in the owen. Moisten a sock with floor cleaner / general cleaning licquid and throw it under the sofa. Voilá!  Now you have a clean & christmas smelling house without having to spend hours and hours on your knees scrubbing the floors or hours infront of the owen.

Create a new folder in you computer. Name it "Home impurities and messes". Take a glass of mullenwine and a gingerbread cookie. Right click on the new folder. The computer will ask you "Do you want to permanently delete the Home impurities and messes?" Click "yes". Lift your feet on the table, take a bit more mullenwine and a second cookie. Enjoy !

Paperista digiin ja takaisin / Paper or digital ?

  Moni meistä on elänyt valokuvauksessa digi-aikaa jo yli kymmenen vuotta. Aikajanaa hahmottaakseni Googlasin koska ensimmäinen digi-Ixus tuli markkinoille. Ostin omani juuri ennen kuin Ixus II julkaistiin. Arvaa vaan harmittiko. Mutta sellaista tämä gadget-friikin elämä on. Aina tulee paranneltu versio, kyse on vain kuinka pian.

  Eli digi-kuvia on kasapäin, on juhlasta ja arjesta. Miksi et käyttäisi näitä kuvia hyväksesi joululahjaa suunnitellessasi? Kun olet arkistoinut kuvat järkevästi, ei ole homma eikä mikään etsiä haluamasi kuvat ja tehdä esim. perheelle kuvakirja menneistä jouluista, ystäville kuvakalenteria tai painattaa isoäidille tyynyliinaa lastenlasten kuvilla.  Digi-kirjan tekeminen on tehty todella yksinkertaiseksi. Voit rajata kuviasi uudelleen, lisätä kuvatekstejä, kirjoja on eri kokoa jne jne. Mitä jos laittaisit parhaat otoksesi A4 kokoisena ”kansiin” ja antaisit kirjaa lahjaksi ?

Itse tein kotona omalla printterillä ja silitysraudalla kummitytöille yöpaidat eräänä kesänä kun olivat lähdössä kesäleirille. Kuvassa olin tietysti minä ja paidan saaja. Huumoria, huumoria pitää elämässä olla.

  Jep, tiedän että kuulostan ifolorin mainokselta J  Mutta eikö näitä digi-tuotteita voi laske myös kategoriaan ”itse tehdyt lahjat”? Ja vaikka tämä digi-maailma on meille ”nuorille” jo itsestäänselvyys, monelle isovanhemmalle se on vielä aika ihmeellistä. Jouluna eräänä annoimme  kummityttöni mummille lahjaksi digitaalisen valokuvakehyksen jossa oli (skannattuja)kuvia useammalta vuosikymmeneltä. Tämä lahja jatkaa antamistaan edelleen. Vink vink tämän mummin tyttärelle : pitää laittaa uusia kuvia raamiin !

  Many of us move the digitalized photography a decade ago. To get the timing right, I googled the Canon Ixus (1) to see when it came to the market. I bought mine a month or two before the Ixus II was launced. Being a gadget-freak I was slightly disappointed. If I could only have waited a bit longer ..  but then I wouldn’t have had the camera with me when returning to China on a business trip.

   So there are heaps of digital pictures. Pictures from celebrations, travels, weekends etc. Why not use them when planning Christmas presents? When you have filed your pictures logically, it doesn’t require a big effort to find the perfect ones to make e.g. a picture/photo-book of past christmases for the family, a 2012 calendar for a friend or print a pillow case to grandma with the grand-childrens pictures.  The making of a photo-book has been done so easy. With the software provided on-line allows you to crop the pictures, add subtitles, there are different sizes of books, etc. What if you selected your best shots ever and made a A4 size book of them and gave it as a present?

  I think it was the summer before the last one, when my two god-daughters were going on a summer-camp, I made them night-shirts. I had the kind of photo-paper at home that could be ironed onto a shirt. In the picture was of course the shirt receiver and me J  Humor, you need humor in life.

Yep, I know I sound like a commercial for ifolor, but couldn’t these digital-products be considered as “self made gifts”?  And even if “we young folks” are familiar with the digitalized world and products related to it, for many grandparents they are really ..  miracle.  The other Christmas the grandmother of one of my goddaughters received a digital picture frame, to which we had stored (scanned) pictures from the past decades. First reaction of course was “What have you bought?!  I don’t understand technical gadgets.” But when shown and explained what it was, the “sound in the bell changed”. Hint hint to the mother of this goddaughter of mine : we need to get new pictures into the frame.

Kuka odottaa mitäkin .. / What do you await ?

Hei tänään saa avata joulukalenterin ekan luukun. Kalenteri on saattanut olla seinällä / näkyvillä jo muutaman päivän, tuomassa konkretiaa odotukseemme. Ei pidä luulla että vain aikuiset (saattavat) tuntevat ahdistusta ajatellessaan joulua. Missä viettää joulu, mitä ostaa lahjaksi kenellekin, jouluruokien valmistus, joulusiivous, jouluruuhkat, paljonko tämä kaikki tulee maksamaan, jne jne  alkavat hiljalleen pyöriä mielessämme. Olenko ollut kiltti, näkikö tonttu, kirjoittiko äiti joulupukille, mitä saan lahjaksi, missä Jeesus on, miksi joulupukki näyttää erilaiselta eri paikoissa, jollei jouluna ole lunta ..  voiko joulupukki tullakaan. Ei pidä vähätellä lapsen mielessä pyöriviä ajatuksia. Kaikeksi onneksi niin aikuiset kuin lapsetkin onnistuvat löytämään odotuksesta sen positiivisen, mahdollisuudet.

  Joku odottaa joululta vain yhdessäoloa perheensä kanssa, toiselle tämä sama on painajainen.  Meitä on moneksi ja emme aina pysty tekemään juuri niin kuin itse haluamme. Syystä tai toisesta annamme periksi ympäristömme meille asettamille odotuksille ..  ja sekö sitten pännii.

Yksi näkee jouluna elämänsä puutteet suurennuslasin läpi  (elokuvasta Mixed nuts)  ja  toisen valtaa hyvä mieli ja lämmin olo shopatessaan  (elokuvasta Himoshoppaajan salaiset unelmat). Itse koen olevani (useimmiten) tuossa toisessa ”luokassa”. Tunnen suurta mielihyvää miettiessäni lista edessäni mitä kenellekin antaa. En yritäkään väittää että lahjani aina miellyttäisivät saajaansa, mutta jokin ajatus niiden takaa löytyy.

  Mitäpä jos ottaisimme hetken aikaa itsellemme ja miettisimme menneitä jouluja ..  Mistä niissä pidimme, mistä emme. Miten löytää tasapaino sen välillä mistä itse pidämme ja mitä läheisemme joululta odottavat. Ei ole mikään pakko tehdä samoja asioita vuodesta toiseen samalla tavalla. Muutokset voivat olla pieniä, mutta vaikutukseltaan suuria. Mietipä asiaa hetki ..

Today we were allowed to open the first door in the Christmas calendar. You may have hung the calendar already some days ago, to bring something concrete to the waiting. One shouldn’t think that it’s only the grown-ups that (may) feel anxiety when thinking about Christmas. Where to spend the holidays, what to get as a present to everyone, preparing the food, cleaning the house, the crowds, how much will all this cost, etc etc are things that start to worry us. Have I been naughty or nice, did Santa’s little helper see, did mom write to Santa, what will I get as presents, where is Jesus, why does Santa look different in different locations, what if there is no snow on Christmas ..  You shouldn’t belittle the thoughts that the children may be processing. Luckily both adults and kids  manages to find the positive in the waiting, the opportunities.

  There are those who only expectation for the holidays is to spend time with the  loved ones. For someone else this thought is a nightmare. Most of us wish for different things and we cannot always do as we would like ourselves. For whatever reason, we give up to the expectations from our surroundings..  and that bugs, doesn’t it.

  At Christmas one sees his/her life’s shortcomings through a magnifying glas (ref. Mixed nuts –movie) and someone else is overtaken by a fuzzy warm feeling when shopping (ref. Confessions of a Shopaholic). I find myself (most of the time) among the 2^nd category. I experience a great pleasure having the Christmas shopping list at hand and making the final decision of the presents to be given. I won’t even try to convince you that my presents would always be in the liking of the receiver, but at least there was thought put into it.

  What would you say, if we would take a moment to ourselves and reminisce the past christmases..  What did you like about them, what you didn’t like. Consider how to find the balance between what you liked yourself and what your loved ones expect.No-one is forcing you to do things the same way year after year!  The changes may be small, but the impact of them great. Think about it ..

Joululevy soimaan, glögi lämpiämään .. / Mulledwine and crafts

  Tässä päivänä eräänä havahduin siihen kuinka pyrin seuraamaan tekemääni suunnitelmaa jouluun valmistautumisen(kin) suhteen.  En koe suunnitelmaani rasitteeksi tai rajoitteeksi, vaan sen avulla varmistan että ..  kaikki (tarpeellinen) tulee tehtyä. Joku toinen voisi kokea suunnitelmani stressaavaksi, tiedostan sen, mutta minä koen jo osan onnistumisentunteesta suunnitelmaa tehdessäni J    

Sairasta?   Ehkä ..

  Joulu kuitenkin on ”iso asia”, minulle ainakin. On monta asiaa joiden tekeminen on aloitettava ajoissa jotta ne valmistuvat .. ajoissa. Näistä yksi on itse tehdyt joulukortit. Useimpina jouluina (joina olen lähettänyt kortteja) olen päätynyt ostoisiin. Kuitenkin itse tehty kortti on niin paljon mukavampi saada.  Vai kuinka? 

  Korttien askarteleminen on mukavaa puuhaa, teitpä niitä yhdessä ystäviesi kanssa tai lasten kanssa.  Ystävien kanssa korttienteko-talkoot voivat olla vaihtoehto pikkujouluille tai ihan vaan teema illanistujaisiin.  Niin ja mikä ett’ei lasten kanssakin askartelusta voi tehdä juhlahetkeä? Askarteluaitasta, Sinooperista, Tiimarista ja monesta muusta liikkeestä saa kivoja matskuja. Kuten ruoanlaitossa, niin askartelussakin ”arvostan” esi-tehtyjä asioita J On saatavilla eri värisiä, -mallisia ja -kokoisia kortteja joihin voi liimata kiiltokuvia, tarroja, huopakuvioita. On leimasimia, glitteriä ..   vain oma mielikuvitus (tai sen puute) on rajana.

  Vinkkejä löytyy edellä mainituista askartelukaupoista, netistä tai ihan perinteisestä kirjastosta. Joku vuosi sitten askartelimme tyttöporukalla yhdessä ystävänpäiväkortteja. Silloin minulle uusi asia oli ”tussi” jonka jälki ”kohoaa” kuivuessaan. Eikö kuullostakin asiantuntijan kommentilta? Kun tuota tussia käytti liikaa, veti se korttia .. kuprulle.  Eli vinkkinä : jos käytät uusia liimoja tai materiaaleja, suosittelen koekappaleen tekoa edellisenä päivänä .. Näkee mitä kuivumisvaiheessa tapahtuu.

   Jos tuo korttien tekeminen on tylsää tai ei muuten vain tarpeeksi haasteellista, mitäpä jos tekisitte omat joulusukat? Eilen niistä pitkään kirjoitin. Tuntuu että mulla on niistäkin tullu pakkomielle. Netistä löytyy kivoja vihjeitä kun googlaa esim ”Christmas stocking” kuvahaulla. Kuten korttien tekemisessäkin, niin tässäkin vain mielikuvitus (ja tietty omat taidot) ovat rajana.

  Kun oikein innostut askartelusta, niin miksi ett tekisi samalla pakettikortteja itse? Kirjoittamalla esimerkiksi loru joko lahjasta tai lahjansaajasta erottaisi lahjasi massasta. Esimerkkinä oma takavuosien lahjakortti mutsille ”Hyvää joulua, ei lämpöä toivottaen Salme”  ai niin, paketissa oli kuumemittari.

 Eli ei muuta kuin joululevy soimaan, glögiä lämpiämään ja itseänne toteuttamaan !

  Just the other day I realized how closely I was trying to follow my Christmas preparation plan. I don’t think the plan is a burden or even restricting me. No, with the plan I ensure that everything (that is needed) gets done.  You might be stressed-out with such a plan, I acknowledge that, but I have a sense of accomplishment already during preparing the plan. Sick? Perhaps J

  Christmas is “a big deal”, at least for me.  There are so many things that you need to start doing early enough to get them ready ..  in time. One of these things is self-made Christmas cards. During most of the past Christmases (that I’ve sent cards), I’ve ended up sending the store bought ones. Anyways it is so much nicer to get a self-made card. Isn’t it ?

  Making cards is a lot of fun, no matter if you were doing them alone or with friends or kids.  Making cards with your friends can be turned out to a “pre-christmas party”  or  just a themed evening spent together.  And who says that making the card with children could be turned out to a moment of celebration? There are various “art & craft” stores selling all kinds of good stuff to use. Similar to cooking, I like “pre-made” things when it comes to crafts. There are different coloured, sized and shaped empty cards to which you can attach stickers, draw / write on, use stamps etc. And to top all that, use glitter J  Only your imagination (or lack of it) is the limit !

  You can get hints&tips from the “arts&crafts” stores or from on-line.  And there are the traditional libraries, with “real” books. Some years ago we made Valentiene’s day cards together with a bunch of girl-friends. At that time the novelty (for me) was the “marker” that had a .. “rising mark”  (you drew a line and it .. became fat). Ooh, doesn’t that sound like a true professionals expression? If you used that marker too extensively, it “shrunk the card” and the card was not flat anylonger. So as a hint : if you use materials or glues you haven’t used before, please do a “test run” the day before to see the reactions.

  If making Christmas cards is boring or otherwise not challenging enough, you could consider making your own Christmas stockings. I wrote about them in length yesterday. Seems that I’m obsessed with the Christmas stockings ..   Just google with “Christmas stocking” the picture search and you’ll get dozens of examples and even step-by-step instructions.  The only limitation again is your imagination, or to some extend your skills.

  When you really get into the crafts, why not make your own Christmas present name-cards? By writing a short poem about the present or the present receiver, your present really stands-out and is remembered. A hand-written note these days is a .. rarity.  

 So, put your favourite Christmas album on, heat-up the mulledwine and release the artist in you !

Joululahjat ajoissa / I’m making a list, checking it twice ..

Pipari-ässä / a big gingerbread cookie

Tänä vuonna päätin tehdä lahjalistan ajoissa ja alkaa toimimaan.  Joskus kysyn vinkkejä lahjansaajan läheisiltä, joskus menen ”tunteella”.  Jos pystyn pitämään suunnitellun matkustusaikataulun töissä, voisin yllättää ja tehdä itse osan lahjoista. Jos tekeleistäni ei ole joululahjaksi asti, ehkä niistä saa hyvää sukantäytettä.  Tänään on perjantai ja hyvä päivä hankkia jotain pientä sukkaan. Lauantai aamu on iloa täynnä kun sukkaankurkistaja löytää sieltä ..  mitä tahansa.

 Ai niin, oletko tietoinen lanseeraamastani joulusukkaperinteestä?

Maailmallahan on täynnä erilaisia tapoja ja perinteitä valmistautua jouluun. Voimme valita omamme kotoa tutuiksi tulleita, kavereidemme perheiden perinteitä, televisioissa näkemiämme tapoja tai kehittää omia. Itse valitsin kaikista edellä mainituista mieluisimmat ja muokkasin ne näköisikseni.

Joulusukka on jotain mitä olemme tottuneet näkemään amerikkalaisissa elokuvissa. Niitä on ollut myynnissä suomalaisissa kaupoissa jo joitakin vuosia, mutta enemmän koristeiksi kun ”käyttöesineiksi”.  Ensimmäisen sukan ostimme vuonna ´91 Yhdysvaltain pääkaupungissa sijaitsevan ostarin joulukrääsäkaupasta. Sukassa oli Arielin, Pienen merenneidon kuva. Seuraavat sukat ostin muutamaa vuotta myöhemmin ja antaessani ne kerroin tarkoittamani käytön. 

 Joulusukka ripustetaan näkyvälle paikalle lapsen huoneeseen kun joulua aletaan odottamaan, eli ensimmäisen adventin tienoilla. Joulusukka on eräänlainen tonttujen postilaatikko. Tontuthan käyvät ennen joulua akkunoiden takaa seuraamassa ovatko lapset kiltisti ja näillä matkoillaan saattavat jättää kirjeen tai pienen lahjan sukkaan.  Joulusukassa voi olla käytännöllisiä ja tarpeellisia asioita kuten kaulaliina, hanskat tai sukkikset.  Kirje tontulta tai jopa joulupukilta itseltään on koettu jännittäväksi, niin lasten kuin vanhempien taholla, saatika kirjeiden kirjoittajan. Kuulin juuri muutama päivä sitten että yksi kummitytöistäni oli pistänyt ”osoitelapun” sukkaansa, jossa hän ilmoitti sukan kuuluvan itsensä lisäksi myös koiralleen ja äidilleen.

Aloitin lahjahankinnat nettiostoksilla: tilasin jouluaiheisia lastenelokuvia sukkalahjoiksi. Näin sain just sitä mitä halusin, eikä kierros kaupassa ”houkutellut” ostamaan mitään ylimääräistä J    Ylimääräistä, liikaa, turhaa, .. joskus päädyn olla antamatta mitään. Hups. Näinkin on käynyt. Lapset / kummilapset saavat lahjoja perheeltään, suvultaan, tuttavilta, jne jne ja useita aattoja tuota tavaramäärä katsottuani ja havaittuani että lapset vain hullaantuvat pakettien määrästä .. olen alkanut puhumaan vanhemmille, että josko miettisivät asiaa. Varsinkin jos kyseessä on hyvin pienet lapset. Tätinä, kummitätinä olen joskus päässyt osalliseksi hieman kalliimpaan lahjaan, joka on päätetty hankkia, tai joskus olen antanut pienen rahasumman (vanhemmille) ”sijoitettavaksi” johonkin tuiki-tarpeelliseen kuten talvivaatteisiin tai harrastusvälineisiin. 

Kaikilla lahjoilla joita annan ei tarvitse olla antajan nimeä kyljessä J  Riittää kun tiedän että olen tuonut iloa saajan elämään. Kornia ?  Toki toki. Tai että parhaiten muistan lahjat jotka antaja on tehnyt itse (tai sellaiset joita en ole itse raaskinut ostaa) ja joissa on huumoria. Yksi mieleenpainuvimmista on saamani piparikala. Näin minunkin joulupöytään saatiin kala, kun olen hiukan laiska ruotojen suhteen ..

 This year I decided to prepare the christmas present list in good time in advance and start executing it. Sometimes I ask for hints from the gift-receivers closed-ones, sometimes I go with “a feeling”. If I can keep the work related travel plan, I could try to surprise folks and do some of the presents myself. If they don’t qualify as a Christmas present J ,  perhaps they could be used as stocking fillers. Today is Friday and a perfect day to obtain something small into the stockings. Saturday morning will be filled with joy when the small stocking owner finds ..  anything in it.

 Oh, are you aware of the stocking tradition I’ve implemented among my children?  The world is full of traditions how to get ready for Christmas. We can choose the ones that become our traditions. They can be from home, from our friends families, habits we’ve seen on TV or we can come up with our own.  I chose the best out of all of the above and modified them to fit my likings. The Christmas stocking is something that we Finns are used to see on American movies. Finnish stores have had them now for few years, but mainly for decorative purposes.

 I purchased our first stocking in 1991 from the capital of the US from a Christmas-junk store at a mall. The stocking had the picture of Ariel, the little mermaid on it.  The next stockings were purchased a couple of years later and when handing them to the kids I explained the purpose I had in mind.

  The stocking is placed in a visible location in the childs room when the “waiting period” for Christmas starts, so around the 1^st advent. The stocking is a kind of mailbox for Santa’s little helpers. As we all know, these little helpers keep an eye on the kids by lurking behind windows, checking who is behaving and who not. Sometimes they may leave something small into the stocking. These little things may be something practical and useful like gloves or scarfs. A letter from the little helper or from Santa himself has been a real trill maker.  A couple of days ago I hear that one of my goddaughters had put an “address label” to the stocking stating that the stocking belonged in addition to herself also to her puppy and mommy.

  I started the present shopping on-line : I ordered Christmas related children’s DVDs as stocking presents. This way I got exactly what I wanted, and were not lured to buy something else during a shop visit.  Something else, extra, unuseful .. sometimes I end up giving anything.   Ooops ! This has really happened. The children / godchildren get presents from their parents, grandparents, relatives, friends, acquaintances, etc etc and after watching this mountain of stuff during many Christmas eves, sometimes seeing kids getting truly hyper ..  I’ve started to speak to the parents if they would put some thought to the present giving. Especially with small children. 

  As the aunt or godmother, I’ve been sometimes included as a “partial financer” to a bit more expensive present. And in some occations I’ve given cash for further “investments” to something useful like winter clothing or hobby equipment.

  Not all the presents I’m giving need to have my name-tag attached to them.  It’s enough for me to know that I’ve brought some joy the present receivers life. Corny ?  Yep yep for sure.   Or that the most memorable presents that I’ve received are the ones that they’ve made themselves (or the ones that I’ve been too cheap to purchase myself) and the ones that have humor in them. One of the most memorable present that I’ve ever gotten is the gingerbread-fish. This way there was fish included into my Christmas eve meal, as I’m a bit lazy with fish-bones ..
