Taivaalla tähtivyö .. / St. Lucy's day

 
   Sitä oppii ”ihmeellisiä” asioita kun yrittää selvittää faktoja, tai niiden rippeitä nott’ei ihan puuta-heinää kirjoita.  Näin joulukuun 13.pvänä tapaamme viettää Lucia-päivää. Tai toiset viettää ja toiset ei. Kaksikielisessä Siuntiossa asuneena Lucia-perinteet ovat tuttuja 70-luvun alusta pitäen. Leikkikoulussa muistan laulaneemme laulua ruotsiksi, suomenkielisen version kuulin vasta vuosia myöhemmin.
  Tarina pyhän Lucia-neidon takana on mielenkiintoinen, voisi sanoa todella mielenkiintoinen  ja pieni ”kaivanta” paljastaa, että tämänkin ”kristillisen” juhlan ajoitus (13. Joulukuuta) käy yhteen esikristillisen keskitalven valon juhlan kanssa. Hhhmmm…
   Tarinan mukaan, erinäisten käänteiden (mm. ihmeparantumisen todistamisen) jälkeen Lucia päätti kääntyä kristinuskoon ja hän vannoi pysyvänsä neitsyenä Pyhän Agathan tavoin. Oman myötäjäisosuuden Lucia pyysi itselleen ja käski jakaa sen köyhille. Perheen palvelija kertoi Lucian sulhaselle, että Lucia oli jakanut myötäjäiset köyhille ja että hän ei menisikään naimisiin tämän kanssa, vaan on kääntynyt kristinuskoon ja menee naimisiin jonkin varakkaan jalosukuisen herran kanssa.
  Mustasukkainen ja harhaan johdettu sulhanen ilmiantoi Lucian viranomaisille, koska tuolloin Roomassa kristinusko oli kielletty. Lucia joutui oikeuden eteen, jossa hänet todettiin syylliseksi ja tuomittiin vietäväksi bordelliin ja pakotettavaksi prostituutioon. Tällöin Pyhä Henki kuitenkin täytti Lucian, ja hän muuttui niin painavaksi, että häntä ei pystytty miesvoimin siirtämään. Vaikka apuun tuotiin vetohärkiäkin, Lucia pysyi järkähtämättä paikoillaan. Kun häntä ei saatu siirrettyä, hänet kertomuksen mukaan päätettiin polttaa. Lucian ympärille rakennettiin rovio, ja häntä valeltiin palavalla piellä ja kiehuvalla öljyllä. Tuli ei kuitenkaan pystynyt vahingoittamaan Pyhän Hengen täyttämää Luciaa. Lopulta hänet surmattiin iskemällä tikari hänen kurkkunsa läpi.
   Jos tuossa ei ollut ainesta legendaksi, niin hankalaa on ”pistää paremmaksi”. Legendasta on toinenkin versio, mutta ei läheskään yhtä .. sykähdyttävä. Oli Lucia-neidon juhlinnan syy mikä tahansa, niin tänään kruunataan monta Luciaa, mennään kulkueessa ja lauletaan Lucia-laulua. Kouluissa ja eskareissa, ruotsinkielisissä sellaisissa saadaan Lucia-pullaa.
  Minusta Lucia-juhlan vietto kynttilöineen ei ole yhtään hullumpi ajatus näin pimeässä talvessa, varsinkin kun lunta ei ole ja on pimeää, niin pimeää ..   ja taivaalla tähtivyö, kirkkaana loistaa …

  I’ve noticed that my knowledge on many topics has increased when looking for (some of) the facts behind these count down topics. I didn’t wish to write fairytales. Today is December 13th and on this date we celebrate the Saint Lucy’s day. In Finland some celebrate and some don’t. I live in the bilingual area of Southern Finland, so here we do celebrate. Just this morning I was wondering why there were so many cars outside a day care center, but then I remembered that it was a bilingual facility and they had the celebrations in the morning so that the parents could also join.
   The legend behind St.Lucy is interesting, really interesting. After various happenings in her life (e.g. witnessing a miracle healing) she decided to turn into Christianity and swore to stay a virgin.
Her rejected pagan bridegroom denounced Lucy as a Christian to the magistrate Paschasius, who ordered her to burn a sacrifice to the emperor's image. Lucy replied that she had given all that she had: "I offer to Him myself, let Him do with His offering as it pleases Him."
  Lucy was sentenced to be defiled in a brothel. The the Christian tradition states that when the guards came to take her away they found her so filled with the Holy Spirit that she was as stiff and heavy as a mountain; they could not move her even when they hitched her to a team of oxen. 

   If the above wasn’t enough to create a legend / a saint,  what is ?   Like to most legends of Saints there are other versions available, but they are not as .. thrilling. It doesn’t really matter what are the details behind the reasons to celebrate St.Lucy. Today in many Lucys are crowned and songs sung.
  Personnally I think it’s a pretty good idea to have this celebration of light in the middle of this dark season, especially this year when we don’t have any snow and it’s so dark ..  so dark..

Ja tapahtui niinä päivinä .. / In those days a decree was issued ..

  
  ”Ja tapahtui niinä päivinä, että keisari Augustukselta kävi käsky, että kaikki maailma oli verolle pantava.  Tämä verollepano oli ensimmäinen ja tapahtui Kyreniuksen ollessa Syyrian maaherrana. Ja kaikki menivät verolle pantaviksi, kukin omaan kaupunkiinsa.”
Näillä sanoin monelle meistä alkaa joulun tarina. Ei ollut Joosefin ja Marian oma päätös lähteä reisuun. Oli pakko, käsky kävi. Nykypäivänä ei välttämättä ole pakko eikä kukaan ole käskenyt, mutta moni lähtee jouluna reisuun velvollisuudentunteesta tai yrittäessään täyttää heihin asetetut odotukset.
   2000 –luvun versio jouluevankeliumista voisikin olla ”Ja tapahtui niinä päivinä että anopilla kävi käsky, että koko suvun olisi tultava hänen joulupöytäänsä. Tämä ei tapahtunut suoralla ilmoituksella, vaan rivien väliin asetetuilla pienillä .. kuittauksilla. Ja näin kaikki lapset perheineen alkoivat suunnitella jouluaan. Ongelmaksi muodostui se, että molemmilla vanhemmilla oli omat vanhemmat hyvissä voimissa ja molemmissa ”mummoloissa” odotettiin perheitä juuri sinne. Tästä alkoi kolmen viikon kiistely ja hampaiden kiristys…  Aattoaamuna perhe pakkautui autoon lahjoineen, lapsineen ja koirineen ja matka alkoi. Koko ajomatkan tunnelma oli kireä, sillä yksi perhe ei voi olla kahdessa paikassa aatto-iltana. Kireää tunnelmaa yritettiin laukaista viinillä ja snapsilla ruokailun yhteydessä ja lopputuloksena oli humaltunut miniä ja appiukko, jotka puhuivat ohi suunsa. Anoppi tästä hermostui ja haukkui miniän maanrakoon, talon isäntä joutui sohvalle yöksi. Jouluaamuna tunnelma oli kuin hautajaisissa, ei syntymäjuhlassa. Painostava tunnelma jatkui koko joulupäivän, sillä eihän perhe voinut lähteä pois kesken ”joulun vieton”. Koko joulupäivänä ei käyty keskustelua täysin lausein. Kyräiltiin ja tiuskittiin. Onneksi tuli toinen joulupäivä ja oli hyväksyttävää lähteä aamiaisen jälkeen matkaan. Kotimatka sujui hiljaisuuden vallitessa. Vanhemmat mielessään vannoivat että tämä oli viimeinen joulu jonka he viettivät näin.. ”
Yli kahdenvuosikymmenen mittainen empiirinen tutkimukseni on osoittanut edellä ”mainitussa” tarinassa olevan enemmän kuin hitunen totuutta J   Kun yhtälöön lisätään pitkähköt välimatkat, sukujen erilaiset jouluperinteet ja jouluun ladattujen odotusten korkeus ..   Huh huh.  Stressiä pukkaa. 
Kansalaiset, medbörjare. Olkaa avoimia ja selkeäsanaisia kun viestitte omia joulusuunnitelmia vanhemmillenne / appivanhemmille. Onhan kyse teidänkin joulusta, ei vain heidän.

  “In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And everyone went to their own town to register.” 

  With the words above starts the tale of Christmas. It wasn’t the decision of Josef or Mary to start the journey. They had to, a decree was issued. These days you may not be ordered to make the trip, but many embark feeling that they had no choice, it is expected from them to travel.

   The 21^st century version of the Christmas gospel could be “In those days the Mother-in-law issued a decree that the whole family should be in her Christmas-dinner. This was not directly communicated but in between the lines and with subtle hints. And so all her grown children started to plan their holidays. What became the problem for our example couple was, that both of them still had their own families who expected them to spend the holiday with them.  So this was the start for a three week bickering. In the morning of the 24^th the family packed the presents, kids and dogs in the car and started the journey.

 Throughout the drive the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. This was because one family could not be in two places at the same time. The attempt to release the tension with an extra schnaps and glasses of red wine only resulted to a drunken daughter-in-law and father-in-law who said too much. The mother-in-law scolded the daughter-in-law and the father-in-law ended sleeping on the couch. The mood in the Christmas morning was more like in a funeral, not in a birthday-celebration. And it continued throughout the day. One could not leave on the 25^th, in the middle of the holiday. No conversation was made that day, only short grunts. Thank god the 2^nd day of Christmas came and the family could pack-up the car and head for home. The drive back home was a silent one. Both of the parents were deciding in their thoughts that this was the last Christmas spent in this manner …”

  My empirical research from over two decades has proven that the above written description has more than a piece of truth in it. When you add to it the long drives, different Christmas traditions and the too high  expectations. Phew ..  One starts to feel the pressure ..

  My fellow citizens. Please be open and very clear when communicating your holiday plans to your parents, family or in-laws. Hey, this is also your Christmas !

3rd advent and Christmas music / Kauneimmat joululaulut

   Hyvää kolmatta adventtia! Tänään lauletaan monissa kirkoissa illalla kauneimpia joululauluja. Näitä joululaulutilaisuuksia on näin pitkin joulukuuta. Jotkut on tarkoitettu lapsille, toiset ”kaikille”. Tänään tilaisuus taitaa kyllä jäädä itseltäni väliin. Olen nyt päivällä menossa käymään Lohjan joulumarkkinoilla. En markkinoiden vuoksi, vaan kuuntelemaan kun siskontyttöni soittaa haitaria Laurentiussalin kaffilassa.

  Jos eilen liputin paistuvan piparin tuoksun olevan jouluntuoksu, niin ei joulua tule ilman joulumusiikkia.

Autossa viritin Jouluradion taajuden het ensimmäisenä adventtina kun ohjelma alkoi.  Onneksi tuo Jouluradio on kuunneltavissa myös netissä, joten ei ole paikkaan sidottu. Nyt kuuntelen Accu-radion yhtä joulukanavaa. Sieltä löytyy jazz, blues, country ja vaikka mitä joulumusaa.

   Meille jotka eivät käy koulujen tai tarhojen joulujuhlissa, nämä kauneimmat joululaulu-tilaisuudet ovat hyvä tilaisuus lauleskella vanhoja suosikkeja. Joukkoon mahtuu myös uusia tulokkaita, siis lauluja. Noin 10 vuotta sitten Veikkolan Haapajärven kirkossa kuulin ensimmäisen kerran ”Sydämeeni joulun teen” laulun. Nyt se soi Jouluradiossa  useampaan otteeseen päivässä eri kotimaisten esittäjien toimesta. Alkaa jo hiukan .. tökkimään.  Noh, joulumusiikin suhteen on varmaan yhtä monta makua kun on kuulijaakin.  Kotimaisista ”uutuksista” suosikkini viimeiset 5 vuotta on ollut Petri Laaksosen ja Virve Rostin ”Talven syliin”. Tähänkin tutustuin Jouluradion taajuudella.

   Kahvi taitaa olla jo tippunut. Käynpä ottamassa kupin, kirjoitan jotain englanniksi J ja lähden .. Lohjalle.   Hhmm.. kaffen kyytipoikana kummipoikani tuomia pipareita. Ensimmäinen oli lentokone ..

  Happy 3rd advent! Tonight in many finnish churches are organized ”the most beautiful christmas songs” singing occasions. These occasions are organized all through December, but today is the “official day”. Some of the singing occasions are targeted for children but most of the “general audience”. It looks that I will miss the singing today. I’m going to visit the Christmas market at Lohja. Not because of the market itself, but my niece is performing there : playing accordion.

   Yesterday I was raving about the small of baking gingerbread cookies to be the smell of Christmas, there is no Christmas without Christmas music. In my car radio I searched for the frequency for the Christmas radio immediately at 1^st advent when it started broadcasting. Luckily this Christmas radio is also available through internet, so one is not bound to a place to listen. Now I’m listening a Christmas channel in Accu-radio. There you can find own channels for christmas music in blues, jazz, country .. beat.

   To us who don’t attend school’s or day care’s Christmas parties, these “most beautiful christmas song” occasions are a perfect place to sing old-time favourites. And there are also new comers, I mean songs. When I was in America .. soon 20 years ago, I bought a Motown Christmas CD. It had songs I had never ever heard before. Two of them became my favourites. Both sung by Stevie Wonder on the CD. The one that made as my ring-tone this year is “Some day at Christmas”.  Now when listening to the Accu-radio, I heard a 2011 version of it by ..  a groups whose name I don’t remember. Recycling. That I like. Now a new generation of music lovers will fall in love with the song. 

(OMG!! When searching for Stevie Wonder  from Youtube, I saw that Justin Bieber has a song called the same !!  No, I won’t listen to it, no)

   Here we are, my cup of coffee is empty, I just had the 2^nd gingerbread cookie from the jar I got from my godson on 1^st advent. The 1^st cookie was shaped like an airplane and the 2^nd like a footprint.

Now off to Lohja.

Voiko tämän helpompaa olla / Could it be any easier ?

  Paistuvan piparin tuoksu on joulun tuoksu, tai sanottaisiinko jouluun valmistautumisen tuoksu.  Aidon kuusen tuoksun voittanutta ei ole. En ole moneen vuoteen hankkinut kuusta kotio, sillä ottaen huomioon kuinka vähän olen kotona, se ei ole vaivan väärti. Saan kuitenkin nauttia kuusesta (tai kuusista) ihan tarpeeksi, sillä kaikkialla muuallahan on kuusi J  Mutta pipareihin ja niiden paistoon. Tälläiselle ”joka toinen viikko” kokkaajalle kotipaistoisten pipareiden teko on kyllä tehty helpoksi. Itse joutuu sentään kaulitsemaan, mutta muutoin on muotti-valmista. En paista pipareita tarpeeksi että voisin itse tehdä vertailua valmiiden taikinoiden suhteen, mutta ehkä tänä vuonna paneudun tähän. Olen aivan liian laiska itse tekemään taikinaa. Ei, ei, en usko että se on helppoa J  Ihailen teitä jotka teette omat taikinanne ja olette löytäneet sen teidän pipareille oikean koostumuksen.

  Ihan tosissani ajattelen tehdä pipareita annettavaksi. Ehkä ripustettavaksi kuuseen tai ihan vaan syötäväksi. En vaan ole kauhean kätevä käsistäni, joten pitää olla tarkkana että muistan sanoa että olen itse ne tehnyt. Eräänä jouluna n.10 vuotta sitten päätin antaa lapsilleni lahjaksi itse-tekemäni essut.  Essu-ikäisiä taisi tuolloin olla kolme. Tein itse kaavat ja ajattelin työohjeita. Ompelukonesta sain ajella Erjan luona. Essut onnistuivat mielestäni melko hyvin, vaikka itse sen sanonkin. Yhden essuista sai sisareni nuorin tytär. Sisareni on vaatturi-tason käsityöihminen, joten kynnys antamiselle oli korkea. Mutta mutta, ei hän huomannut että essu oli itse-tehty! Ei katsonut tarpeeksi tarkkaan, sillä ei ole odotettavissa että minä antaisin omien kätteni töitä lahjaksi. Olin hyödyntänyt yllätysmomenttia.

  Ajattelin mennä kauppaan ja etsiä oikein suuria muotteja pipareilleni. Ehkä joku Muumi-mamma tai pikku-Myy voisivat olla suosittuja. Sydänkään ei olisi hassumpi. Voisin jatkojalostaa ensimmäisenä adventtina käyttämääni ”myyntipuhetta” kun tarjosin (kaupan) pipareita : saako olla rohkeutta (sininen kuorrotus) tai rakkautta (punainen kuorrutus) ? En vaan ole aikaisemmin kuorruttanut pipareita .. joten tulee olemaan jännää !

  Pipareiden sijasta voisi antaa myös oman kokeilukeittiönsä tuotoksia. Joku aika sitten kolleegani Intiassa aloittivat sähköpostilla kiertokirjeen, jossa lähetettiin omavalintainen resepti ”listan” ensimmäisenä olevalle. Tämän kiertokirjeen tuloksena sain joitain varteenotettavia ehdokkaita jouluiseen kokeilukeittiööni. En edes kuvittele ensimmäisen yrityksen olevan pois annettavaksi, joten nähtäväksi jää mitä ennätän pilotoimaan. Ooh, uunini tulee saamaan nyt joulukuussa enemmän äxöniä ko aikasempina 11 vuotena yhteensä.

  The smell of gingerbread-cookies baking  is the smell of christmas, or the smell of christmas preparations. Well, nothing beats the smell of an authentic Christmas tree (spruce). I haven’t had a Christmas tree at home for year, because I don’t spend that much time at home. I simply don’t think it’s worth the trouble. Anyways I can enjoy the Christmas trees in “other places” as everyone else has a tree. But back to the gingerbread cookies and baking them.  For a cook like me (who cooks every second week), the home baked gingerbread-cooking making is made really easy. I have to roll the dough myself, but otherwise you can get the dough “mould ready”. I’m not baking often enough to compare these store bought doughs, but perhaps this year I’ll try out several different batches. I’m too lazy to make the dough myself. No, no, I don’t believe it’s easy to make J   I do admire you who make your own doughs and have found the best .. consistency.

   I’m seriously considering baking this year, even to be given away. If I succeed, perhaps some of them even end up hanging in a tree. I’m not that handy, so I have to remember to say that I’ve made them myself. One Christmas about 10 years ago I decided to give my kids self-made aprons. I had at that time three kids at the “apron-age”. I made the pattern and “working instructions” myself. I could use Erja’s sewing machine and even saying it myself, the aprons turned out pretty nice. The receiver of one of the aprons was my niece whose mother, my sister, can sow like a tailor, so it wasn’t an easy choice to be giving a self-made apron to that household. But guess what happened: she (my sister) didn’t even realize the apron was hand-made. She didn’t look at it carefully enough, because it was not expected that I would have accomplished to do something like that. It came as a total surprise.

   I’m thinking of driving to the supermarket and look for good, nice, BIG cookie moulds. A Moomin mama or Little My could be nice.  A heart wouldn’t be bad either. I could develop further the “sales speech” I used during the 1^st advent kids-visit : “Would you like courage or love?” Courage from a cookie with blue frosting and love from red. I haven’t done the frosting myself before, so .. it’s going to be exciting !

  Instead of a gingerbread-cookie I could also give a product from my “experimental kitchen”.  A month or  two ago my colleagues from the India project initiated a “recipe-swap” chain letter. As a result of it, I got some recipes that I consider trying out myself this Christmas. I’m not even imagining that the 1^st attempts would be good enough to be given away, so time will only tell which of the recipes pass beyond the pilot phase. Oooh, this means that this December my oven will see more action that during the past 11 years in total.

Jouluksi valmiiseen pöytään / Options for a stress-free Christmas eve meal

    Jos ruokailu ei olisi niin oleellinen osa jouluperinnettä, uskoisin monen joulustressin puuttuvan. Suorittamani yli 30 vuotinen empiriinen tutkimus kiistatta osoittaa kuinka paljon odotuksia jouluruokailuun kohdistuu. Tuleeko pöytään kinkku vai kalkkuna? Tehdäänkö laatikot itse vai ostetaanko? Mitkä laatikot kuuluvat joulupöytään? Onko erikseen sillipöytä ja juustopöytä? Kun ruokailuun kuluu monta tuntia, kuinka pitää ruoat lämpiminä ja lapset aisoissa?

    Miksi et kokeilisi viettää joulua muualla kuin kotona? Erilaisia vaihtoehtoja on tarjolla useita. Voit mennä maatilalle, kylpylään, hotelliin, laivalle, etelään jne jne. Edellä mainituille vaihtoehdoille on vielä kotimaiset ja ulkomaiset kohteet, eli tässä meillä on käsillä ns. ”runsauden pula”. Siis jos etsii vaihtoehtoisia tapoja / paikkoja viettää joulua. Ei ole sitä ”ainoaa oikeaa” tapaa. Voit itse valita !!

   Jep, tähän kuten valintoihin yleensäkin, on paljon taustavaikuttajia, mutta se mitä haluan sanoa on : sinä teet valinnan. Ja seuraavaksi jotain mikä on melkein vastoin luonnettani. Huh. Mitäpä jos poikkeaisit tutuista joulurutiineista jotka ”vain” aiheuttavat lisästressiä ja kokeilet jotain uutta?

   Unelmasta valmiiseen joulupöytään pääsemisestä olen kuullut niin nuorilta kuin vanhemmilta tutuiltani. Muori joka on valmistanut joulupöydän perheelleen yli 40 vuotta on tänä jouluna pääsemässä ensimmäistä kertaa tähän valmiiseen pöytään tehtyään ”repäisevän päätöksen” ja varattuaan kylpylähotellista lomapaketin. Mielenkiinnolla jään odottamaan palautetta reisusta.

   Minulla itselläni on suuri pelko että tulevassa painoksessa Nykysuomen sanakirjaa ”kyläluudan” kohdalla on minun kuvani ja nimeni. Järjestän toki itselleni joulun, mutta melko pienessä mittakaavassa. Vuosien varrella on muodostunut vakiopaikkoja jossa minua jopa odotetaan aattona tai joulunpyhinä, joten minä olen pitänyt huolen siitä että pääsen aattona valmiiseen pöytään, tai kahteen, tai jopa kolmeen kuten viime jouluna ..

 

  Kyläluuta = Joka on kylässä aina, ei ole kotona.  Eikö tämä ole sama kuin asuntosäästäjä ?

   If eating wasn’t such an essential part of the christmas traditions, I truly believe that many would have stress-free holidays. The empirical research I’ve been conducting over 30 years shows without a doubt how high the expectations are when it comes to the Christmas eve meal. Should we have a ham or a turkey? Shall we make the casseroles our selves or buy them? Which casseroles actually belong to the Christmas table? Should we have a separate cheese setting and herring setting? As the eating lasts for hours, how to keep the dishes warm and kids under control?

   Why wouldn’t you spend Christmas somewhere else than at home? There are various options to choose from. There are ready made holiday packages to spend the “long weekend” at a farm, in a spa, in a hotel, on board a cruise, fly to a “warm place” (= to south if you look from Finland), etc etc.  And for most of the previously listed domestic options, there are similar ones available abroad. There is no “one correct way” to spend Christmas. You can choose yourself!

   Yep, to this decision is no exception : there are many influencing factors, but what I want to say is : you are the one making the decision. And next something which is almost against my nature. Phew. What if you would stray from your familiar Christmas routines that “only” causes stress and try something new?

   I’ve heard from my old and young acquaintances about their dream to get to a ready-set Christmas table.  A granny that has been preparing the Christmas table to her family for over 40 years is this year getting to this “ready –set” table. She made a bold decision and booked a hotel package from Lapland. I’m eager to hear her feedback on the trip.

   I don’t prepare a “full blown” Christmas at my own home. Why should I as I have so many places J to visit during the holidays. During the past years some places have become a tradition for me to visit. Places where I’m actually awaited to join their Christmas eve and/or a “left over” meal on the following holy days. A table or two, or even three “ready-set” tables like last Christmas eve.  Oh yeah, three is too many.



Suomalaisen musiikin päivä / the Day of Finnish music

  Tänään on Suomalaisen musiikin päivä. Minulle jokainen päivä on musiikin päivä, ei tosin aina Suomalaisen. Jos aamulla on tunne, että ei nyt ole kaikkein paras fiilis, musiikkivalinnalla saan itseni paremmalle tuulelle. Suomalaisen musiikin päivää vietetään Jean Sibeliuksen syntymäpäivänä, syystäkin. Suurelle yleisölle hänen laajasta tuotannostaan on tunnetuin tietenkin Finlandia –hymni, joka a. on osa laajempaa kokonaisuutta ”Historiallisia kuvia”. b. ei alun perin ollut tarkoitettu laulettavaksi. c. oli Biafran kansallislaulu.

  Kaikkein aikojen kauniimmaksi Suomalaiseksi joululauluksi on äänestetty Sylvian joululaulu, joka taasen oli osa Topeliuksen runokokoelmaa ”Sylvian laulut”, jonka Karl Collan sävelsi joululauluksi. Runo on vuodelta 1853 ja sanoissa oletetaan kuvailtavan Suomen tuolloisia itsenäisyyspyrkimyksiä. ”Häkki mi sulkee mun sirkuttajan” –kohdassa Suomi lieneen tuo sirkuttaja ja Venäjä häkki.

  Topeliuksen runoon perustuu toinen suosikki-joululuauluistammen ”Varpunen jouluaamuna”. Niin surullinen, niin surullinen sanoitukseltaan ja haikea säveleltään. Hyvin Suomalainen joululaulu. Ei mikään kepeä ”Kulkuset, kulkuset..”  sillä runo oli osa Topeliuksen surutyötä edeltäneenä vuonna kuolleen poikansa muistolle.

  Olemme taas päivän lähempänä joulua J Joulu on perhejuhla, jouluna myös muistetaan perheenjäseniä jotka eivät ole enää kanssamme. Perhe ei käsitteenä ole aivan yksiselitteinen. Ydinperheen lisäksi on tullut perhe, jonka jäsenet sinä itse valitset. Ehkä heitä voisi kutsua nimellä ”tärkeät lähimmäiset”. Verisiteen lisäksi / sijasta voi olla voimakas tunneside. Jouluun valmistautuessani mietin joskus minne jotkut ihmiset ovat elämästäni hävinneet. Olenko unohtanut heidät vai unohtanut muistaa heidät? (ajatus elokuvasta ”Yksin kotona 2 – Eksynyt New Yorkissa).

  Ja näin pääsimmekin New Yorkiin, missä 1980 tällä päivämäärällä John Lennon ammuttiin. Dakota building kuului siis pakollisiin nähtävyyksiin 1993 kun ensimmäisiä kertoja kävin kaupungissa. Olimme onnekkaita tuona keväisenä päivänä, sillä näimme kun Yoko Ono poistui rakennuksesta. Valitettavasti paparazzi-Junttonen ei ollut valmiina, mutta muistoissa tuo päivä on kirkas.

   Today is the day of Finnish music. Yep, we have a day for it. For me every day is a day of music, not necessarily of Finnish music thought. When I wake up in the morning and feel like ..  missing the groove, with the choice of music I can get myself on a better mood. The day of Finnish music is celebrated on the birthday of Jean Sibelius, and for a reason. For the big audience the most know of his works is Finlandia, which actually a.  is a part of a bigger .. ensable “Historical pictures”, b. wasn’t originally meant to have lyrics / to be sung, c. was the national anthem of Biafra.

  When we had a vote in Finland for the most beautiful Christmas song, the winner was “Sylvia’s Christmas song”, which again was a part of poem collection “Sylvia’s songs” by Topelius. Karl Collan composed it to a Christmas song. The poem is from 1853 and in the lyrics it is assumed to be described Finland’s attempts for independence. “The cages that keeps my singing bird” it is assumed that Finland is the bird and ..  Russia the cage.

  Another all time favourite Christmas song is also based on Topelius poem, “The sparrow on Christmas morning”. Its lyrics are sad, so sad and the melody melancholy. A very Finnish Christmas song. Not a light and cheery “Jingle bells, jingle bells..” as the poem was a part of the grieving work Topelius was going through after his sons death.

  And so we are a day closer to Christmas J  Christmas is a family holiday, we also remember the ones who are no longer with us. The concept of family is not simple. In addition to the nuclear-family has become the extended-family, the family which members you choose. In addition / instead the blood-connection there is an emotional bond.

 When I prepare for Christmas, I sometimes remember close friends, who no longer are .. close friends (or even considered acquaintances). Where did they go ?  

As Kevin puts it in “Home alone 2 : Lost in New York” : Have I forgotten them or forgotten to remember them?

   And so we got to New York, where in 1980 on this date John Lennon was shot. Dakota building was on top of my “places to see” when I visited New York for the first time in 1993. We were lucky that spring day in ´93, as we saw Yoko Ono exiting the building. Wow J   Unfortunately paparazzi-Junttonen was not ready: I only got a blurry snap. But my memory of the day stays clear.

Mennään markkinoille / Let's go to the Christmas market

  Joulumarkkinoiden katsotaan saaneen alkunsa Saksassa 1200 luvun lopulla ja ovat edelleen oleellinen osa adventtiaikaa siellä, eli kyse on varsin vanhasta perinteestä J Saksassa markkinat alkavat jo marraskuun lopulla, Suomessa yleisimmin hiukan myöhemmin.  Turku on yksi poikkeuksista. Siellä markkinat alkoivat ensimmäistä adventtia edeltävänä lauantaina 26.11.  Lohjan perinteiset menneen ajan joulumarkkinat ovat nyt tulevana viikonloppuna. Porvoossa joulumarkkinat siitä viikon kuluttua 17. ja 18.12. Helsingissä tapahtumia on useita, esim. Tuomaanmarkkinat 7.-21.12. Senaatintorilla ja Vanhan joulumyyjäiset 10.-21.12. Vanhalla ylioppilastalolla.

  Valitsitpa minkä tahansa markkinatapahtuman, niin suosittelen jälkikasvun mukaan ottamista. Nämä ”entisajan messut” voivat olla hyvinkin sivistävä kokemus. Olen nähnyt sepän takovan hevosenkenkiä ilman sähköä, villojen karstaamista ja kehräämistä, asioita joita ei ole enää aikoihin tehty kotona ja kuitenkaan siitä ei ole pitkääkään aikaa kun ne olivat osa Suomalaista arkea.  

  Itse käyn joulumarkkinoilla enemmän kokemassa kuin ostamassa. 2005 menin Lohjan menneen ajan markkinoille kahden Intialaisen työtoverini kanssa.  Ei varmaankaan tule yllätyksenä kun kerron, että nämä tummahipiäiset herrat olivat varsin hämmästyttävä näky tuona päivänä, niin nuorille kuin vanhemmillekin markkinakävijälle. Monella kävi varmaan mielessä että siinä kulkee Tiernapoikien Murjaanien kuningas ja hänen sijaisnäyttelijänsä.

  Hoo-o, jos minä olen musta ..    Muistuikin mieleeni Oulussa näkemäni Tiernashow. Tänä vuonna se on nähtävillä Oulun Teatteri Riossa  ja  Kalajoen Kylpylähotelli Sanissa. Tämä show on vienyt Tiernapoika-perinteen aivan uudelle tasolle. Heidän internet-sivuillaan todetaankin : ” Show yhdistää perinteisen tiernapoikanäytöksen tanssiin, lauluun, musiikkiin ja huikeita juonenkäänteitä sisältävään tarinaan”.  

 

  The beginning of Christmas markets date back to the late medieval Germany and are still a visible part of the advent time. So one can truly say that it’s a tradition J  In Germany the markets start in the end of November, in Finland a bit later. The city of Turku is an exception. There the Christmas market started on the November 26th, the Saturday before 1st advent. The “traditional bygone era’s Christmas market” is now on the coming weekend. Porvoo has it’s market a week from that, on Dec 17th – 18th. In Helsinki there are various events, e.g. at the Senate square the “Tuomaanmarkkinat” open today (Dec 7th) and last ‘till December 21st.

  Which ever Christmas market you choose to visit, I do recommend you to take your kids with you. These “bygone days fairs” can be an educational experience. I’ve seen a blacksmith make a horshoe without the usage of electricity, raw wool being made into yarn, things that haven’t been done at home for ages and it is not so long ago when they were a part of the everyday life in Finland.

  I personally visit the Christmas markets more for the experience that to do shopping. In 2005 I visited the Christmas market in Lohja with two of my Indian colleagues (Sandeep and Kadir). I guess it doesn’t surprise you to learn that these two dark-skinned gentlemen were an astonishing sight that day for both the young and elder market visitors. Many must have had the thought that there goes the king of the Moors from the “Star boys” and his understudy.

Don’t you dare to think that this “Star boys” reference was far fetched J   At the age of 11 (?)

I was one “of the boys” in our school’s christmas play. I’ll get back to the details later …
