Öljyihme / Festival of light

   Alkuperäisessä joulukalenteri-ideassani ”tapahtumat” sijoittautuvat kerrostaloon, jossa vierailemme 24-25 asunnossa ja tutustumme erilaisiin tapoihin valmistautua jouluun. Kun mietin millaisia perheitä, asukkaita, talossa olisi, yksi ”ryhmä” jonka listasin oli juutalaiset. Haasteeksi oli muodostua se, että en tunne yhtään juutalaista, en tunne heidän tapojaan.

Kaiken mitä tiedän, olen joko oppinut kirjoista, telkkarista tai internetistä. Tämä ei pysäyttänyt minua. Etsin tietoa ja opin seuraavaa.

  Tänä vuonna Hanukan katsotaan alkavan tänään, 20.12. Alkamispäivä vaihtelee hiukan vuosittain, sillä heillä on oma ajanlaskunsa ja kalenteri.  Hanukka-juhla kestää kahdeksan päivää ja sitä juhlitaan vajaa parisataa vuotta ennen ajanlaskumme alkua tapahtuneen öljyihmeen muistoksi.

  Hanukan ensimmäisenä iltana kodeissa sytytetään yksi kynttilä, toisena kaksi jne. Koska nämä kynttilät ovat pyhiä, niiden valoa ei saa käyttää hyödyksi esimerkiksi lukemiseen, joten lisäksi on sytytettävä aina yksi ylimääräinen kynttilä. Edellisenä iltana poltetut kynttilät on seuraavaksi vaihdettava uusiin niin, että kaikki kahdeksan pyhää kynttilää ovat samassa tasossa keskenään. Hanukka-juhlan aikana kodeissa poltetaan yhteensä 44 kynttilää. Hanukka-kynttelikköä kutsutaan nimellä hanukia, ja se asetetaan ikkunalaudalle niin, että kotiin palaavat ihmiset sen nähdessään muistavat hanukan ihmeen ja iloitsevat.

  Ottaen huomioon että juutalaisuus on hyvin laajalle ”levinnyt”, oikein pistää ihmettelemään että en ole koskaan nähnyt omin silmin hanukia, tai menoraa. Tai hei, olen tainnut nähdä, tai ainakin minun olisi pitänyt nähdä. Ja taas palaamme vuoteen  ’93   Tuolloin vierailin juutalaiskodissa, useammankin kerran.  Höh, siinä meni sekin mahdollisuus sivistää itseään J Ei tarvitsisi ”ottaa oppinsa” Frendeistä. Tosin, tuon jakson kirjoittajat ovat löytäneet asiasta .. koomisuuden. Onneksi Frendien lisäksi on mm. Viulunsoittaja katolla ja iki-suosikkini Yentl.

Hei, pitääkin katsoa jos tuon leffan saisi jostain tilattua.

  Viulunsoittaja katolla -elokuva julkaistiin 1971, sen jälkeen kun musikaali oli niittänyt menestystä 60-luvulla. Elokuvan musiikki sain Oscar-palkinnon. Yentl on Barbra Streisand’in ohjaama, kirjoittama ja tähdittämä elokuva vuodelta 1983. Pettymyksekseni luin juuri että vaikka Barbran kanssanäyttelijöistä kaksi olivat jo tuolloin palkittu aikaisemmista laulurooleista, vain Barbra laulaa elokuvassa. Onhan Barbra mahtava esiintyjä, mutta ..  olisi hän voinut jakaa muidenkin kanssa paikkansa auringossa!  Taas nähtiin että elämä on niin epäoikeudenmukaista..

  In my original Christmas countdown concept, the main location is an apartment building. During December we would visit 24-25 households and see how different families, occupants prepare for Christmas. When I was thinking about these different  households, I wanted to visit a jewish home.  The challenge is that I don’t know any jews, I don't have any first-hand knowledge.

All I know is from books, TV or from internet. But this didn’t stop me. I searched for information and learned the following.

  This year Hanukkah (festival of light) starts today, December 20th. The starting date varies a bit from year to year, as the jews have a calendar of their own. The Hanukkah celebrations last for eight days and it is celebrated to commemorate the miracle of burning oil about less than 200 years BC.

  As a universally practiced "beautification" of the mitzvah, the number of lights lit is increased by one each night. An extra light called a shamash, meaning "attendant"," is also lit each night, and is given a distinct location, usually higher, lower, or to the side of the others.

The purpose of the extra light is to adhere to the prohibition, specified in the Talmud，

against using the Hanukkah lights for anything other than publicizing and meditating on the Hanukkah story.  This differs from Sabbath candles which are meant to be used for illumination. Hence, if one were to need extra illumination on Hanukkah, the shamash candle would be available and one would avoid using the prohibited lights. Some light the shamash candle first and then use it to light the others. So all together, including the shamash, two lights are lit on the first night, three on the second and so on,  ending with nine on the last night, for a total of 44。

  Considering that the jewish religion is widely ”spread”, I do wonder how I haven’t ever seen a hanukia (Hanukkah candle-holder) or a menorah.  Hey, I might have seen one. And so we return back to the year ´93. That year I visited a jewish house several times, but missed the opportunity to educate myself.  If I’d pay more attention to my surroundings at that time, I wouldn’t need to learn from Friends. I think the script writers for that episode have done a good job to capture the .. dilemma. Luckily in addition to Friends we have e.g. the movies Fiddler on the roof and Yentl. That reminds me, I need to check if I could get my hands on that movie.

   The movie Fiddler on the roof was released in ´71 after the 60’s success of the musical. The music on the movie won an academy award (Oscar). Yentl is directed, written and starred by Barbra Streisand from 1983. To my disappointment I just learned that in the cast of Yentl there were two rewarded singer – actors, but still in the movie we only hear Barbra singing. Barbra is a great performer, that I cannot deny, but ..  she could have given the other a place in the spotlight as well.

Here we see again that life is so unfair..
